Choose one of the following case scenarios presented for your project. In this presentation you will address the following Learning Outcomes:
discuss and evaluate a range of theories of ageing and their influence in shaping beliefs about ageing, older people’s health care needs and experiences as well as the
contribution they make to maintaining active ageing societies;
examine critically how age, as a social category, intersects with other social categories such as gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality;
explain how the ageing body is constructed, understand the ageing of body systems, differing pharmacodynamics and nutritional considerations in different social,
cultural and biological discourses and the bearing this brings to health and health care practices;
Your presentation should:
Include a title page with the unit code, your student details (name and student number)
A reference list, referenced in accordance with APA.
Be between 5 and 8 minutes in length and contain no more than 15 slides.

Case Scenario One:
June Carter is an independent, socially active and fit 85 year old woman who takes great pride in her appearance. She has three adult children and five grandchildren
and has been widowed for ten years. She visits her local GP to discuss her recent problems with vaginal dryness during sexual intercourse.
In relation to this scenario consider and discuss the perspectives of June, June’s GP and June’s adult children and possible courses of action from these perspectives.
Be sure to discuss and evaluate the theories and beliefs about ageing that may shape the beliefs and attitudes of the different people involved. In doing this analyse
the manner in which age is intersecting with other social categories in this scenario. Also, include a discussion of the physical and biological changes that may have
an impact on June’s situation.
Case Scenario Two:
Peter Thompson is a fiercely independent 78 year old male who is the sole carer for his wife, Shirley. Peter has significant industrial deafness and refuses to wear
his hearing aids. Shirley has Type II diabetes mellitus and is vision impaired. She has never been in paid employment and has never had the need to drive. She is very
reliant on Peter who takes great pride in ensuring that all her needs are met. Peter was recently involved in a motor vehicle incident and his licence has been
suspended.
In relation to this scenario consider and discuss the perspectives of Peter, Shirley and a health care professional of your choice who may be involved (excluding the
GP) and possible courses of action from these perspectives. Be sure to discuss and evaluate the theories and beliefs about ageing that may shape the beliefs and
attitudes of the different people involved. In doing this analyse the manner in which age is intersecting with other social categories in this scenario. Also, include
a discussion of the physical and biological changes that may have an impact on the situation.
Case Scenario Three:
Chuanli Lee is an 92 year old Asian male who is widowed and lives with his son, Chung and daughter in law, Ah Lam. He has been admitted to hospital for excision of a
tumour on his right calf. The wound has become infected and he is on IV antibiotics. He refuses to eat the hospital food and his family visit frequently to provide him
with meals. They are also insistent on providing all personal care and often question the quality of the wound care. Staff are frustrated by these actions.
In relation to this scenario consider and discuss the perspectives of Chuanli, Chung, Ah Lam and the ward staff and possible courses of action from these perspectives.

Case Scenario Four:
Jane Henderson (65 yrs) and Carol Baker (66 yrs) are a couple who have lived together for 26 years. They held a commitment ceremony with their close friends many years
ago, however, Jane’s parents, Joyce and Bob, and sister, Kath, did not attend and refuse to recognise the relationship. Jane has MS that has recently progressed to the
point where Carol is unable to care for her without significant assistance. Carol is investigating care options to keep Jane at home but Jane’s parents and sister are
insisting on admission to a residential facility. Jane has not nominated a Power of Attorney or Enduring Guardianship.
In relation to this scenario consider and discuss the perspectives of Jane, Carol and Jane’s family and possible courses of action from these perspectives. Be sure to
discuss and evaluate the theories and beliefs about ageing that may shape the beliefs and attitudes of the different people involved. In doing this analyse the manner
in which age is intersecting with other social categories in this scenario. Also, include a discussion of the physical and biological changes that may have an impact
on Jane’s situation.
