The Essay needs to focus on the theme of conservatism and show how far the novel can be considered as conservative.
Discuss the value of conservative decorum versus more radical social standards e.g. Elinor abides by the standards of decorum whereas Marianne believes in the free expression of passions. Both are hurt in love, but we can see clearly that the author believes Elinor is right and Marianne excessive. Morality is also always an issue in Austen’s novels. Both girls are inclined to be moral, but Marianne’s approach leads her to be incautious without realizing it.
