Order Description
Read the article ‘Highlighting Hybridity’ by Hanrahan and answer the 6 questions below. This is Chapter 9 in the Course Reader (Coffin, C., Lillis, T. and O’Halloran,
K. (eds.), 2010, Applied Linguistics Methods: A Reader, London, Routledge), though note that this is an edited version of an article written in 2006.
To help you prepare for TMA1(Tutor Marked Assignment) Part B ,consider these 6 questions:
1) What is the real-world problem discussed in the article?
2) What purpose did Hanrahan have in writing about this issue?
3) To what extent is she agreeing/disagreeing with, or building on, theory and other research findings and claims?
4) Which of the research findings described by Hanrahan particularly surprised or interested you? Why?
5) Was a ‘solution’ or ‘amelioration’ of the problem suggested as a result of the research findings?
6) Do you have any experience of similar real-world problems? Or can you relate this article to other real-world linguistic problems?
When making references (including Hanrahan’s article, can you get into the habit of putting in the in-text reference as you would in a written report e.g. (Hanrahan
2010:151).
(The full reference in your TMA report, in the list of references will be:
Hanrahan, M. (2010) ‘Highlighting Hybridity, in Coffin, C., Lillis, T. and O’Halloran, K. (eds.) Applied Linguistics Methods: A Reader (pp.148-162). London: Routledge.
