This assignment is for group discussion assignment. Discussion leadership is 20% of total grade. Please carefully read all the readings and develop 12 questions that will provoke meaningful dialogue (cannot be all from the same reading). How can we integrate The Natural Step framework into all aspects of the business’s operations?
1. Elimination of waste. Is there a policy to create zero waste? What is the best way to re-examine current sources of waste and create programs to reduce and ultimately eliminate them?
2. Benign emissions. Though less visible, business and industry creates more molecular garbage than solid waste. Small concentrations of poisons, persistent manmade chemicals, greenhouse gases, and localized heating are affecting all living systems, accumulating in animal tissue, fouling air and water systems, affecting reproductive cycles, and changing our climate. Is priority given to the elimination of molecular wastes that have negative or toxic effects and are emitted into natural systems?
3. Energy Conservation. Is there a focus on improving activities of the business in order to consume less energy and to reduce demand?
4. Closure of the loop. Most industrial systems are linear. Natural systems are cyclical. Recycling, rather than downcycling.
5. Resource-Efficient Transportation. This can mean moving people, products, information, and resources. This can mean lighter and less packaging, carbon offsets,
6. Sensitivity Hookup. Most of society does not understand the basic principles of natural systems or the ways individual and collective human actions affect them. A solution to this could be that all associates, business partners, customers gain a better understanding of these factors and their challenges not only to business, but to humanity.
7. Redesign of Commerce. Is there an effort to green the supply chain?
