Two and a Half Men.
Paper instructions:
Here is a summary of the show, please add anything you think would be appropriate: Two and a Half Men is a comedy sitcom featured on CBS that
premiered in 2003. The first eight seasons of the show chronicles the lives of three men: Charlie, Alan and Jake. Charlie and Alan are brothers,
and Jake is Alan’s son. Shortly after a divorce, Alan moves in with Charlie to his beach-front property. Most of the comedy stems from the
conflicting character personalities of the show. Alan is portrayed as anxious and uptight while Charlie is care-free, pleasure-seeking and
womanizing. In the ninth season, Charlie is killed and replaced by a character named Walden Schmidt who becomes the new housemate and close friend
of Alan and Jake.
Why we chose the show: The character Charlie Sheen/Ashton Kutcher plays is a womanizer who can get pretty much any woman he wants. He is also
portrayed in the show as a “real man” who is rich and can provide. On the other hand, his brother is sensitive to women who is not afraid to be
submissive and dependent – so not as much of a “real man.” In addition to that, the show portrays women as objects to be had. Lastly, it is
important to consider the title of the show itself and which characters fit each role and what behaviors cause them to fit into that category
1. Regarding gender stereotypes, how are the two brothers portrayed differently in Two and A Half men? What do you think this says about the
norms and stereotypes that currently exist in our society?
2. How does the variation in the male characteristics influence Jake in his own maturity? How close to reality is this for younger viewers??
3. What is the significance of the show’s title? What does the “and a half” man represent?
