UFO abductees

Choose Option A or B, below, to write a 500 – 750 word essay in which you make a general point and illustrate it with specific examples:
Option A:  Select one of the following general statements below, or set forth a statement of your own that one of them inspires. Making your statement your central idea (or THESIS), support it in an essay full of examples. You may draw examples from your reading, studies, conversations, or your own experience. If you refer to reading, see directions for MLA In-Text Citations in the Content area.
•    People one comes to admire don’t always at first seem likeable. Describe someone you know for whom this is true. Support your essay with specific examples and illustrations.
•    Each family has its own distinctive lifestyle in terms of food, recreation, work ethic, and ways of relating to one another. Choose one of these aspects of family life (or pick another, similar aspect) to describe how your family is distinctive. Support your essay with specific examples and illustrations.
Option B:  Many people are members of a minority group. Some minorities are racial, ethnic, or cultural. Other minorities may be related to lifestyle (e.g. bikers or people with tattoos), interests and hobbies (e.g. spelunkers, paddlers, naturists), similar life-experiences (war veterans, children of alcoholics) or beliefs (Wiccans, UFO abductees, or unusual religious groups. Note: mainline Christianity is NOT a minority group).
Make a generalization about the fears, joys, or contradictions that members of a minority group seem to share. Draw examples from your personal experience and observations and/or from the readings in The Bedford Reader by the following authors: Nancy Mairs (13), Maya Angelou (110), Amy Tan (116), Brent Staples (226), Firoozah Dumas (320), Gloria Naylor (517), Christine Leong (523), Linda Chavez (605), Sandra Cisneros (620), Martin Luther King (643) and Richard Rodriguez (681).  If you refer to any of the essays listed above, see directions for MLA In-Text Citations in the Content area. You are not expected to read all of these essays, but choose some which seem to be of most interest to you, and do read them as models for the type of subject matter you will be writing about in your essay.
Regardless of which topic you choose, the key to a good illustration and example essay is developing an interesting and relevant thesis statement about your topic and using specific examples to convey your point.  The more clearly you can focus and distill your thesis, the better your paper will be.  For instance, while it may be true to say “It’s wrong to stereotype people by the color of their skin,” it’s too general for a thesis.  Who would disagree in today’s society?
As  I read your essays, I will be looking for the following:
•    A clearly defined topic that you can develop within the space alloted;
•    A clearly stated thesis that provides the reader a clear sense of purpose and direction for the essay;
•    Specific examples that explain and illustrate your point;
•    Reasonable control of grammar and punctuation, with an emphasis on the correct use of commas;
Appropriate MLA format for the essay and any in-text citations.
