Answer three (3) of the questions below, drawing from the textbook or any other sources that you have access to. Read each question carefully, organize your responses, and write focused, clearly written essays. The exam is due on SUNDAY, March 7. It covers chapters 1-6.
1. When we think of cities we often focus on those people and places within a defined geographic boundary. Yet, thinking about cities from a global political economy perspective we consider people, institutions, geographical features, infrastructures, assets and liabilities of a much broader area that transcends municipal boundaries. What are four key elements that can be used to define a city in the era of global interdependence?

2. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the three ecological models of urban form. Which one do you think is best for helping us understand the ways that cities are developing in an era of intensive, deepening globalization?

3. Kleniewski contends that cities are inherently fragile arrangements. Identify and discuss a major element in the rise of a pre-1800 city, that sometime later contributed to its decline. Identify and discuss a similar phenomenon in a 20 or 21st century city in the United States.
