Both the documentary Manufacturing Consent and the Jentleson book discuss the ways in which news sources shape how we perceive foreign relations. In this research essay option you will test this hypothesis.
First, choose from the list the below a country, region or organization for your research
• Afghanistan
• Any African country
• ASEAN
• Cuba
• China
• European Union
• India
• International Monetary Fund
• Japan
• Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia
• Nigeria

Then, find at least twenty (20) news stories on the relations of the US with that country region, following these selection parameters:
• limit your research to 2012 to 2016 (as in “Current US Foreign Relations”)
• major/national news outlets
• regional US news outlets (including how news wire service stories are presented)
• foreign news media sources
• use sources from across the left/right/center political spectrum
In your essay of 1898 to 2016 words, address at least the following questions:
What trends to you see?
Are there differences across the left/right/center political spectrum in the ways in which stories about the country or region are reported?
Is foreign news coverage different from the way the same stories are presented in US-based news organizations?
