Contemporary Criminal Justice Issue: Use of Force – media portrayal and use of technology
• My stand point is for reasonable use of force but taking the necessary steps to ensure loss of life isn’t taken unless absolutely necessary due to officer/public safety. Also, my stand point on the media is negatively impacting the criminal justice system by the negative portrayal of officers especially with officer involved shootings with the use of technology (smart phones) by the public. There has to a balance to keep the public informed and keep their trust but to keep our officer’s safe as well when video gets uploaded to social media it has a negative portrayal before actual facts are sorted out.
I selected use of force because of the impacts on the delivery of criminal justice— one that will be the focus of my final case analysis and recommendation brief.
In this paper make sure you demonstrate my understanding of the issue and its history, evolution, and development. You will need to focus on past and future criminological theories and policies behind the issue. Given your analysis of the issue, discuss the impact on society and what problems need to be addressed to remedy the negative ramifications. I will attach peer review articles that you can use, and use https://www.justice.gov/archive/crs/pubs/pdexcess.htm there is a lot of info if you scroll down on Use of Force Continuum. Some good cases that involve use of force is Graham v. Connor (1989), Tennessee v. Garner (1985), Nelson v. City of Davis (2004), Plumhoff v. Richard (2014), Rodney King, Laquan McDonald Shooting (2014), Jerold Blanding (2015) Lavall Hall Miami Gardens (2015), Phillip White (2012) and Michael Brown Ferguson, Missouri and James Boyd Albuquerque, New Mexico.
