Verse or Prose Comparison

Paper instructions:

Explain what the works mean; don’t say what they merely say. Go deeper. What are the works underlying themes? Your paper should analyze how the authors achieve

their effects by the same and by different means (irony, understatement, simile…)

Use the standard “Five paragraph essay” western structure:
1. Hooks (interesting attention grabbers) for title, introduction (first line/s) and conclusion (last line/s).
2. Thesis statement in introduction paragraph
3. Topic sentences / transitions in body paragraphs
4. Restated thesis statement in conclusion paragraph
5. Body paragraphs must have 5 or more sentences. Intro/conclusion paragraphs must have 3 or more sentences.
6. Body paragraphs should include several textual citations with line or page number addresses within parenthesis.
7. Body paragraphs should compare the works point-by-point rather than writing on each work separately and joining them in the middle, like taping two different

essays together. Compose well-developed paragraphs that stick to one aspect that is introduced in the paragraph’s first sentence (the “topic sentence”).

Misc:
– Use statement sentences and not questions – unless as hooks – as they sound conversational / chatty.
– NO contractions (don’t/isn’t/aren’t/he’s…) or first person pronouns (I/me/my/mine/our/we…)
– Conciseness is the key. Trust yourself to have enough to say. Do not write “wordy” sentences to fill the word-count or your mark will be lower. Becoming a

concise writer will help you in other classes and when writing memos.
– No research is to be done on this essay. This will help you avoid plagiarism issues.
