This is a virtual laboratory. Perform this laboratory online through a virtual laboratory website using the attached instructions. Record your observations, and submit them in the format described in the instructions and by the due date listed in the syllabus. Please access this laboratory online through the Biology Labs On-Line website, under the FlyLab link.

First, read the introductory and background information under the following links within the laboratory: Introduction, Objectives and Goals, Before You Begin, Background Information, and Genetic Abbreviations.

Next, read the background information document on which is attached under this assignment link. This sheet summarizes all of the various types of mutations covered by the FlyLab, and discusses whether each mutation is recessive/dominant or lethal/non-lethal, as well as discusses the location of each mutation on fly chromosomes. Usually, you would not have this information available to you prior to conducting your experiments and instead you would have determine this information experimentally; however, since this is an introductory-level course, I included this information to help you confirm any results you obtain through your virtual lab bench within the FlyLab.

I strongly recommend that before you conduct any experiments on any of these mutations through your FlyLab lab bench that you first predict your results for each described cross using Punnett square analysis, which you will be learning in the accompanying lecture course. Doing this will help you formulate more accurate hypotheses and predictions for each cross.

As you complete these assignments, keep the following in mind:

Biology Labs On-Line website, unlike the Mastering Biology laboratory website, is a READ/BENCH ONLY website. This means you will be able to read about your lab procedure and perform your experiments through the Biology Labs On-line website, but you will then need to submit your “lab report” for this laboratory through THIS assignment link in Canvas.

So, you will NOT be able to submit your answers through the Biology Labs On-Line website. This means that you need to manually export any notes or tables that you create as part of any Biology Labs On-line laboratories, save them to your own computer, and then manually submit these through our Canvas course.

IMPORTANT: If you do not export your notes/tables from the Biology Labs On-Line website as you work, save them to your computer, and then manually submit them through the Canvas course, you will LOSE your work and will receive NO credit for this laboratory.

The lab report for this laboratory consists of the following:

1. Copies of ALL notes/graphs which you create while completing this laboratory. So, again, please remember to save copies of your notes to your computer as you complete this laboratory (and NOT the end of it)!

The preferred format for both of these – your graphs and your answers to lab questions – is Adobe PDF. Ideally, you should attach your lab notes as an appendix at the end of the document with your lab answers. However, you may also submit your virtual notes as separate attachments and/or as internet browser screenshots.
