I enjoyed Harlem, “What happened to a dream deferred?” Although I think the tone of this poem is sad because he is talking about lost dreams, this poem made me take inventory of where my dreams have been deferred. Did I allow them to just “Dry UP”? A lot of times life causes you to put dreams on the back burner which can cause you to never accomplish or attempt to revive the desire to go after that dream again, it may just “dry up like a raisin in the sun”. I like this poem because to me it makes me think about the African heritage, Jazz clubs and the soul food, all that started with a dream that was not allowed to rotten like meat. All the food references made sense to me, I feel like a lot of dreams are develop in the African heritage at the soul food Sunday dinner table, but once the dinner is over and the conversation has ended, what happens to the big dreams? No one puts the effort forth to get the ball rolling which means the dream basically dries up like a raisin in the sun, or crust and sugar over. I imagine a lot of dreams came out of Harlem and I am sure there are a lot of heavy loads that was not as fortunate as Louis Armstrong.
