What in society helps us realize what is normal and what is not normal. (ex: Transgender people)

My teacher gave us a very broad prompt. I’m not entirely sure what he wants, but for the most part the paper has to be about something(s) in society that help gain our own opinion on what is normal. Almost like a breaking social norms idea. All things that help us to know what is supposed to be “normal”. We talked a lot about Transgender people in class when we got assigned this paper.
