What is an Essay?

What is an Essay?

Paper details

In this course, you will be asked to write short essays of 250-750 words in each module. In preparation for these weekly assignments, you are now asked to reflect upon your own writing process and what you understand an essay to be. The essay has a long history.

Perhaps history’s greatest essay writer, the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne, published his volume in 1575 at the height of the Renaissance. Reading any one of his Essays will give you an excellent idea of how this form of writing can be perfected.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American master of the form. Emerson’s Essays are available online for free.

You might also do your own research on the essay before writing this brief assignment. Most importantly for this assignment is your own thinking about essays. You have already completed at least one composition course before registering for this course. Think about what you wrote and learned in that course as you write your essay.

Write a short 150-250 word essay on your definition of what an essay is. Use your own experience in first semester composition courses as well as any research or reading you have done when writing this essay. This is a reflective essay that asks you to think about your own writing process and what you have written in the past. How do you write an essay? What steps do you follow? What are the parts of an essay? What makes a good essay? Use your own words and be mindful.
