Observation is a research method foundational to art and design. Rather than see research as something large, forbidding and extremely serious, you are invited to initiate your research from something you personally observe. This task asks you to communicate an issue that you have noticed as somehow needing attention because it is exceptional, rewarding and you think there should be more of it, contradictory, wrong, or just plain irritating. It might occur anywhere: travel experiences, domestic chores, where you work part-time, and exhibitions, festivals or events you’ve recently attended. Identify the general domain of your observation (technological change, environmental sustainability, globalisation, and identity), and think about how art and design can engage with a specific issue.
Document the issue with a series of printed photographs, drawings or collages (based on your original photographs), video or audio. Describe the issue in 500 words and consider the implications for future generations if this issue is ignored. Based on these implications, name two focussed objectives for the research and explain why it matters (the rationale and significance). To locate your research in relation to art and design discourse the documented observation must also identify two contemporary projects or practitioners who are recognised as engaged with a related issue in the literature. Tattoo have pure motivation or POSITIVE meaning and it is one of the oldest forms of body art which should not be misunderstood (ie. traditional ceremonial business)

This research SEEKS to understand the actual motivation for People to get a tattoo(why do it: fashion, trendy, peer thing?)
This research SEEKS to what extend it is acceptable now compared to the past, especially when female expression of individuality through the body art. Do women with tattoos impact gender identity when it comes to promiscuity?Because some community members such as people at my mum’s age have a strong negative opinion towards to tattoo.

Some forms of body art more understandable when the culture had traditional beliefs and practices. The arts form can be inherited and developed as long as it is becoming more understandable and acceptable.

The research I’ve found has been done about 5 years ago or in other countries, so my research can be a updating of this issue which based on nowadays and Sydney.

People are more likely to doubt and scare about the things that they are not familiar with. So that they would judge those with tattoos. Someone scared to go into the community or become sad about the choices they made to get a tattoo.
This is an important because they may are looking for an identity or fit in with their peers or EARNrespect.

Assessment Synopsis
Case studies are a useful strategy to initiate new explorations of a research interest as they focus on a particular issue. In art and design, case studies provide a vivid description of a work/project, describe its public reception, and argue for a particular interpretation within a selected theoretical framing. This case study will demonstrate your engagement with art and design discourse via a search of the literature on your topic. A well selected case study that has attracted published commentary will provide links to how other people have thought about the topic with points of view and theoretical perspectives that may be similar or different to your own. In other words, people who are also INTERESTED IN your topic!
Conduct a literature search on one of the works/projects identified in Task 1 and that is related to a key aspect of your observation. Develop a case study analysis (1000 words) that describes the work/project in DETAIL so that the reader can ‘see’ it in their ‘mind’s eye’. The case study will summarise how the work/project has been discussed in published commentary and identify the tacit or explicit conceptual framing or theoretical perspectives used by the writers. You will identify a theoretical framing that you find insightful and provide a brief summary of that framework’s assumptions and key concepts as described by a leading author in art and design discourse. References for the case study will include:
• three book chapters by key authors on your topic
• three up-to-date articles from the UNSW Library Databases of scholarly peer-reviewed journals and/or academic publications concerned with your selected theoretical framework in art and design discourse.

Assessment Synopsis
A developed research proposal clearly describes your focussed topic (what), the context in which your topic is relevant (the larger issue it relates to), the rationale and significance of the research (why it matters), your approach to exploring and understanding more about the topic (methodology/ies) and how you will frame your interpretation and analysis (theoretical framework).
Building on Task 1 (Observational research) and Task 2 (Case study analysis) draft a 1000 word proposal that: • articulates the research statement or question
• provides a background to the research in a case study that identifies a relevant theoretical framework and demonstrates engagement with current art and design discourses
• demonstrates understanding of the conventions of APPLYING the selected research methodology/ies (documented observation, case-study, and research-led practice, such as cultural probes, material/technology/process experiments, and reflective practice)
• ACCOUNTS for the advantages and shortcomings of the selected research methodology/ies
• ADDRESSES the following subheadings with one to two paragraphs of academic English text for each: Research statement or Question, Rationale and significance, Background case study, Methodological approach, Intended audience for whom the research will be relevant, Anticipated findings
• includes a substantial bibliography for the research proposal including at least 3 monographs, 3 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 1 conference paper or Masters/PhD theses related to the topic
