Paper instructions:
I would like you to look for a short piece of writing that addresses a topic with widespread impact. Once you have identified the article that will be the start point for your paper, I want you to consider how the author is presenting and considering the topic. A good place to start is a review of newspapers, magazines, or even, a reading in our text. Read and record your immediate responses and then, set your response aside and consider how this topic impacts the rest of the world. Is the topic a problem to be solved, a statement of how things are, or a combination of both? Now, meaning aside, begin to think about the following:

• Who is the audience for this piece of writing and how does this inform the crafting of this piece?

• Who is the publisher of this piece of writing?

• How does the author order their discussion of this piece and is it effective?

• What types of points are raised in this article? Are they fully and equally discussed?

• Look at the choices of tone, style, and diction. Are these choices consistent with the intended audience?

• Is there an emotional appeal in this article? Is it effective? Why or why not?

• Are the conclusions reached well-supported and logical?

• Compare this essay or article to others that you have read. Think about the choices in comparison and independently. How do the choices of structure, tone, and language influence meaning? What are the effects of these choices?
