Women’s & gender studies

Discussion Questions:
In Wild Swans, Jung Chang describes her experience of the Cultural Revolution and the persecution of her father by the Communists. Her mother was also held in detention. Your other reading for this session is a scholarly article by Emily Honig, an historian who attempts to explain why some young girls avidly participated in the violence and cruelty that characterized the Red Guards.
Questions for discussion:
What is Emily Honig’s explanation for the behavior of the female Red Guards?

How does Jung Chang’s personal description of that time add nuance and detail to Honig’s article? Do the two complement or contradict each other?

What does each of these two different sources of information about the Cultural Revolution contribute to your understanding of this period of Chinese history and women’s role in it? Are they equally valid? Why or why not?
