Cells. PLoS One. 2013;8(2):e54592
The summative assignment is to write a 600-word critical review of the article.
Note about Referencing
Refer to the Reference Format Guidelines document for examples of how to cite
References in your text and how to list them in a Bibliography.
There is only one acceptable format for reference citation, which is summarised in the Reference Format Guidelines document available on the BMS2113 UniHub homepage.
Please find below the website link for the “cite them right” reference tool with all guidelines you need:

Primary research articles are very important – do not restrict your sources to books and review
articles. Note that a Web address in isolation is not a satisfactory

citation – see Reference Format Guidelines.

Summative Critical Review
Part I. Structure of your critical review:
Short introduction about the problem/aims addressed in research paper (maximum of 1-2 sentences)
Arguments of your critique – 3 arguments, each stating in separate paragraph (length depends on the world counts)
Brief summary of your critique (not summary of paper!) and recommendations for the authors (what may be improved or further directions for study) (maximum of 2-3

sentences)
A Note about Presentation
The overall presentation of your work will contribute to your mark and should be well structured throughout. Write in scientific style and avoid using vernacular

language and personal pronouns. Grammar and attention to sentence and paragraph structure are important.
Include the total word count on your cover sheet.
Note that the word limit is 600 words + 10%; for work below 540 words or above 660 words, marks will be deducted.
The bibliography and citations within the text do not contribute to the word count.
Part II. Critical Analysis (600 words +/- 10%)
To ‘critique’ does not only imply to ‘criticise’. You should give a balanced evaluation of the strengths and/or weaknesses by presenting your arguments and supporting

your views with published evidence.
IMPORTANT – Your evaluation must draw upon published literature to refute or support any assumption, line of argument or conclusion in the article that you select to

critique. You might also include recommendations on how the article can be improved in terms of argument or research design.
This means you must identify, review and effectively use references that will be listed in your Bibliography.
Do not focus on the presentation of the article such as organisation of sections, subheadings,
etc., as these are dictated by the research journal.
If you are finding interpretation to be difficult, then you may need to do additional background research. It is highly recommended that you regularly check the UniHub

page for activity on the Critical Review Discussion Thread. If you have specific questions or difficulties, you may post a question there.
Your critique should cite the article, which may be abbreviated as Li et al.
Part III. Bibliography (not included in word count)
The most important aspect of the critical review exercise is identifying and using published literature to support your evaluation effectively. You must provide a

reference list at the end of your critical review and it is imperative that the selected references are cited correctly and completely. The article you are critiquing

should be included in the Bibliography.
The references you select should cover a variety of sources (books, research and review articles, web sites) and these should serve as supporting literature to justify

the arguments presented in your critique.
IMPORTANT – There is only one acceptable format for reference citation, which is summarised in the Reference Format Guidelines document available on the BMS2113 UniHub

homepage and this link http://ezproxy.mdx.ac.uk/login?url=http://www.citethemrightonline.com
