DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF AN ORGANIZATION

Undoubtedly, you have had recent experiences with numerous organizations.  This exercise will assist you in identifying differences in organizations from a multiplicity of orientations (dimensions). In effect, for this assignment you are being asked to think specifically about organizations you have been associated with recently, develop your own conceptual dimensional model for looking at their characteristics, and think more specifically about the managerial functions in each of these organizations.  You probably already know a great deal more about organizations and their management than you think.  This exercise should be useful in getting your thoughts together. The paper may be written either serially or concurrently.

Step 1:        Select one (1) organization with which you are familiar, not one you find on the internet. Obtain approval of the organization from the professor! Ideally, it should have about 100 – 2000 employees to assure that the analysis will not be trivial or superficial.

Step 2:        Analyze this organization by applying the six dimensions of national culture advanced by Hofstede (1983; 2001) and various websites. Only four are described in his 1983 paper; you will need to find the other two. [see blackboard for external links]

Step 3:    Write your dimensional paper based on your reasoned responses to Steps 1 and 2.  This paper is to consist of about 16 typed, double-spaced pages (4000 – 5000 words) in Word format and is due October 10, 2014. Please send an electronic version to me as a Word attachment. Begin your paper with a description of your organization (about two pages) and conclude with your overall assessment (about two pages). Equal emphasis is to be placed on each of the six (6) dimensions and their application to your organization; equal emphasis is to be placed on the theoretical (one page each) and applied (one page each) portions of each dimension.
