ANNOTATION TEMPLATE
Citation:
• Either APA/Chicago/AMA/ MLA depending on your preference
• It is important to make sure you cited your source correctly and in the right format.
• Use writer’s reference!

Summary:
• Explain the purpose of the source
• Identify and quote the thesis (main claim) and explain what the author is proving – use signal phrase (ex. According to Dr. K.. / Dr. K is arguing… etc.)
• Explain what form of research/evidence used to support thesis. Statistics? Surveys? Experiments? Observations?
• The purpose of the summary is to explain the big picture of your source. It does not have to be super detailed. 5-6 sentences is an acceptable length.

Background:
• Who wrote your source? Google their name to attain extra information about them that may be important.
• When and where was your source published? Is it relevant? If so, why? – Use Google!
• Who is the intended audience? (Children, Scientists, VCU Students, Richmond residents, etc.)
• Identify the type of source. Is it a newspaper article, journal entry, scholarly article?

Analysis
• Explain why your source is useful for your research. How might you respond to it?
• Identify and discuss any strengths and weaknesses, if any. Defend your analysis/support any critiques you make!
• If possible, identify any allies or opponents that are addressed in this source.
