The Campus and You: A Response This assignment is a response to Tuan, Rose, and Massey. Having been exposed to a few distinct viewpoints regarding space and place, you will synthesize and respond to these viewpoints in a paper that relies, in part, on your own experience of the UCI campus or other campuses. This assignment should display strong critical thought regarding the spatial thinkers we’ve read and a great deal of rhetorical savvy when it comes to using your own experience. If it helps to advance your thinking about the campus, you can also engage selectively with the reading from Week 1 (Whisnant’s article and the op-eds by Keller and Weitzer). Here are some potential lines of inquiry you can explore: Place has emerged has a complicated concept. Why does place matter when considering what the campus should provide for its inhabitants? Experience is an important concept for Tuan. What is distinctive about your experience of campus, and how can this “experiential data” contribute to the conversation we’ve generated around the readings from Tuan, Rose, and Massey? And I like that you are trying to develop a definition of “belonging” in terms of both the physical dimension of campus (buildings, architecture, etc.) and the social dimension (other people, activities, etc.). Really try to explain that change to your readers using specific examples from your experience. Explain how and why UCI went from feeling like a maze to feeling like a home. I’d recommend splitting it up into shorter paragraphs to make it more visually appealing for your readers. Also, I have trouble at times understanding your writing due to grammar issues and sentence structure. What strategies do you have for improving this aspect of your paper?
