Article critique.

Introduction:

· This is an introduction for the critique. Why did you select this research article? What do you how to discover that you can apply to your teaching? How will your critique be organized? How will you rate each section (excellent, good, fair, poor)? Will your construct a table or graph to summarize your critique? How will you assess the application of the findings to your teaching?

Research Critique:
• You may want to start with the credibility of the authors. • Is the author or authors employed at a reputable institution that will require a through Institutional Research Review Board (IRRB)?
• Has the author published on this topic before? Has the author ever published before?

• It is a good idea to address each section in the order that it appeared in the article. • Did the introduction capture your interest? Were you inspired that the research question is important? Was the purpose of the study clearly communicated?
• Did the review of literature use relevant and timely sources? Was there an adequate number of sources? Was there an identification of the “gap” in knowledge that would be supported of this study?
• Did the design of the methods seem appropriate to answer the research questions? Did the method section provide enough information that the study could be replicated? Was research ethics addressed? Was exclusion of participants explained?
• Was the analysis of the results accurate? Were the results fairly reported without embellishment? Were the limitations of the study identified? Were areas for future research listed?

Application to Nursing Education
• Is there any new knowledge that you can use in your teaching or your research?
• How could the results be modified for your setting (or not useful)?
• Was a best practice identified or supported by the results?

Conclusion:
• Tell the reader again the purpose of your critique and the most important points to remember from this critique. Revisit what you hoped to gain from the article in the introduction. Did you learn something that you could use? Do not include any new quotes in a conclusion.

• Check that all sources that appear in the critique are listed in the reference section. Check for correct and current APA style.
