Assignment 5: Masks

For this assignment, you will designing a mask that reflects your personality. You can use any medium of art
such as plaster, paper maché, paint (your own face), clay, fabric, any other medium or combination of media to
create your mask. BUT…you CANNOT use a preformed mask as your base.
Write an essay that describes the following:
• Part 1: (about 3-4 paragraphs)
Research masks from one of the following cultural perspective:
Africa; India & Himalayas; Bali & Java; the Orient; Oceania; Native America.
• Describe the kind of masks that represent “good ” in the culture you chose.
• Describe the kind of masks that represent “evil” in the culture you chose.
• Describe the role of masks and their function in the culture you selected.
You must include THREE sources of reference for the one culture you chose. (You cannot use Wikipedia.)
• Part 2: (about 2-3 paragraphs)
Think about your personality and what YOUR make would look like. What colors would it be? What
medium would you used? How would it reflect your personality? For example, what would an
expression of “the jealous personality” look like? Possibly green and angry looking. Remember: Traits
that can be positive as well as negative!

Part 3: (about 2-3 paragraphs)
• Draw your mask using the template below.
Part 4:
Describe what you learned about yourself and how the art of masks helped you become more aware of your own
personality traits and your own creative expression.
