ISP and Customer Network Design Report

Introduction

You are required to write a report to the directors of a newly formed ISP known as ACMEISP. Their priority is to

implement an overlay network, initially capable of securely handling the voice / data applications for two major

customers initially known as Company A and Company B respectively, shown in figure 1 below. The directors of ACMEISP have

asked for you to report on possible technological solutions for the implementation of their core network.

The first issue is the selection of a suitable internal routing protocol capable of handling large quantities of both TCP

and UDP traffic. The second issue for consideration is the selection of a technical solution for the ISP infrastructure

which should be selected from the technologies you have studied within the module (MPLS or ATM). The communications for

the initial two companies are initially inter-site only (VPN), with the exception of email and Web service. This

indicates that security and quality of service is of high importance and the technologies being discussed must be able to

transfer the data between one company’s sites without interference from the other company’s data. Another important issue

is the transfer of real time data such as voice and IPTV internally between sites without the loss of fidelity.
In the first part of the report you are requested to discuss and analyse the operation of possible infrastructure

technologies and routing protocols that can be implemented in the core ACMEISP network stating the advantages and

disadvantages of your chosen technologies culminating in a firm and qualified choice of implementation.

The ISP’s customer Company A has two high profile converged networks with a requirement to communicate in the form of a

virtual private network. Company A has a public class C network address of 195.10.10.0/24, and utilises an internal

private class B addressing scheme of 172.16.0.0/16. It is decided that Company A site 1 will initially be given the

private address range starting with the sub-network 172.16.1.0/24 (other sub-networks in ascending order can be

utilised). You are requested to construct a variable length sub-netting scheme (VSLM) for Company A site 1 as shown in

Figure 2. Also you are required to discuss how internal private addressing can be transferred to the external network

ensuring that no private addresses leave the network. The managing director of company A also wishes you to suggest a

suitable scalable routing protocol for the network giving reasons for your choice.

The next part of the report concerns the secure transmission of applications between the sites. You are to select an

appropriate access method from each site to the ISP utilising secure WAN Technologies and describe how the chosen

technology can route traffic from one site to another securely via a VPN as in the diagram on the next page figure 3.
The directors of ISP ACMEISP also require you to analyse within the report its customer requirements to implement a

secure converged voice, video / data network, this includes the requirement to securely access the ISP internet services.

There is also a need for outside users to have access to the sites e-mail and WWW server but not to any other services.

You need to improve on the network shown in figure 4 on the next page. On behalf of their customer base you are required

to discuss the implementation of the following.

1. The implementation of a converged network discussing your choice of equipment, signalling and codecs.
2. Discuss any security issues may occur from the previous discussions concerning the network and also from the

following diagram (figure 4) you should discuss the use of access lists ACLs. Produce a diagram of your secure

implementation
3. Discuss Quality of service issues within the ISP which could affect the transmission and quality of voice / video

applications and suggest possible remedies in terms of QOS appropriate to your chosen technology for the ACMEISP core

network.
