Deontology: Lying to a Murderer

Plot/Background: Your friend is fleeing a murder and tells you that he is headed home to hide. The murderer comes by shortly thereafter and asks where your friend has gone. It is obvious to you that the murderer is headed toward your friend’s house, and you believe if you do nothing to intervene, the murderer will surely catch up with your friend.

Question: Using what you know about Deontology, explain what you should do. Be sure to include the Categorical Imperative you are relying on in your decision, as your explanation of the Categorical Imperative will be a significant part of your grade.
