Experimental design is foundational to quantitative research. Experimental studies involve a generalizable sample, reliable and valid instrumentation, and appropriate research design. This module covers central ideas related to experimental study including how variables are manipulated or controlled, models of experimental design, threats to experimental validity, and implications of these issues to the counseling profession.
Module four will also provide the reader with a basic understanding of predictive designs and how to apply this method to counseling research. The identification of predictor and criterion variables, role of the correlation coefficient, and the use of multiple regression and factor analysis will be discussed. Predictive designs are a form of correlational research that seeks to forecast or predict future outcomes. Using identified independent variables, researchers conducting predictive designs are able to make estimations about the outcome of a dependent variable.

As simple as surveys may appear, survey development is a complex process guided by a clear scientific method.
