Paper instructions:
In this assignment, you will be learning about how selected diseases and environmental estrogens can affect human health. The World Health Organization has a wealth of information about mortality, disability burdens, life expectancies, demographics, and other topics related to environmental health. You can find massive amounts of data in table form by country, disease, and death rates at: http://www.who.int/en/
To get specific information on three emerging diseases, go to: http://www.who.int/health_topics/en/ When you get there, click on “Health Topics” in the Navigation bar on the left side of the page. Then, under the Topic, “Media Center”, find the WHO Fact Sheets and get the fact sheet for anthrax and print a copy of it. Then go back to the WHO Fact Sheets and click on Spongiform Encephalopathies, Transmissible and print a copy . Scroll down to Fact Sheets and print copies of both Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and Creutzfeld-Jakob Syndrome.
Then I want you to go to the Center for Disease Control in the US at: http://www.cdc.gov/ In the “Contents” Navigation bar on the left of the screen, click on the topic “Diseases and Conditions”. You will see the “Health Topics A-Z”.You will find the title “West Nile Virus Basics” by scrolling to the right, and clicking on the “W”. Please download a copy of the information on this topic for background information. Take the fact sheets on these four diseases: anthrax, West Nile Virus, Spongiform Encephalopathies, Transmissible, and Creutzfeld-Jakob Syndrome, and answer the following questions about each of them.
What organisms can cause these diseases?
What is their current distribution and prevalence?
What environmental and social factors contribute to their spread?
What treatment, if any, exists for these diseases, and how might they be prevented?
For the second part of this assignment, you will be learning about environmental and human health affects of environmental estrogens by going to the following site at Tulane University: http://e.hormone.tulane.edu/
Under the title “Learning”, at the top of the page, click on “Endocrine Disruption Chemicals”, “Estrogens Explained”, and “Estrogens and Estrogen Mimicking Compounds” to answer the following questions on EE (Environmental Estrogens). Please send the entire assignment to the Canvas grade book.
