What is the relationship between the individual and society that “Ruth Hall” puts forward?

awareness of various positions within the critical community on the text.

The main focus, however, is to demonstrate your ability to support with textual evidence in the form of quotations and citations from the actual

work and your ability to explain how your inferences follow from that evidence. You will demonstrate your ability to revise and edit your paper

for structure, clarity of purpose and argument, and grammatical precision.

Note that your research may indicate that current discussions on the text focus on other issues. In such cases, you will utilize

“metacommentary” that simply acknowledges the major concerns. For example, you might open a brief paragraph with “Much of the discussion on

(name of text) has focused on (name a concern) and (name another concern). For example, (name a scholar) argues “quote” (cite).” And so on. You

would likely end the brief discussion with something along the lines of “While these discussions are certainly significant, I am focusing

specifically on (restate your thesis).”

If someone does discuss your concern, you will discuss with them what is really going on: the secondary material is not evidence. Only the text

is evidence that supports your point.

In short, the focus is on your reading of the text, not your ability to find out what others have argued. Research is meant to push you further

into the text. You do not want to say what everyone else has said. Be disagreeable.
