Ethnomusicology

Ethnomusicology

Using a minimum of three course readings discuss the relationship between global popular music and ethnicity. In what ways has popular music been
used to reinforce, resist, or renegotiate ethnic boundaries, ideas, and sentiments? In what ways
has popular music served as a tool for narrating and reinventing the histories and identities of
ethnic groups?

The chosen theme (nationalism or ethnicity) should be well-defined (minimum of a
paragraph). For your definition of nationalism or ethnicity, you should consult either the
required readings or the list of supplementary sources to be provided by the instructor.
• The chosen cultural/geographical area(s) should be described (minimum of a paragraph).
• The relevant musical genre(s) should be described (minimum of a paragraph).
• If you choose to address your theme by comparing different genres from different
cultural/geographical areas, you should offer brief background information on each.
• An original argument (or a succinct synthesis of existing arguments) about the
relationship(s) between popular music and nationalism/ethnicity should be stated clearly
and addressed consistently throughout the paper. Claims must be supported by evidence
from the readings. The argument/synthesis can be conceived as a response to two general
questions:
o In what ways has popular music been used to reinforce, resist, or redefine
national/ethnic boundaries, histories, identities, etc?
o In what ways do existing national/ethnic boundaries, histories, identities, etc.,
shape popular music?
