Assignment: Write a director’s production concept statement for one of the five plays that we have read in class.

Instructions: Pretend you are directing a production of one of the five plays we’ve studied so far in class. Your job is to share with me your production concept for the play. Your production concept statement should be two-typed pages (double-spaced). Use Aristotle’s Six Parts of Drama (plot, character, thought, diction, music, and spectacle) to organize your ideas into paragraphs. For this project, you have complete artistic freedom to do what you want with your play. You can update MEDEA to the 25 century and set it in outer space. Or, you stage MEDEA as the Greeks did. You’re the director, what is your vision? For example, what would you do with plot, character, thought, diction, music, and spectacle? You should write about all six parts.

As you write your production concept, here are some things to think about. With plot, you might write about what you see as the major conflict in the play as well as where the climactic moment falls. You can also write about any changes to the plot you want to make such as setting it in a different time period. For character, you can identify the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s). You can also identify actors that you would cast in your production. For thought, you should write about what you see are the major ideas that the play expresses and the ones your production will highlight. For diction, you can write about any challenges that language presents or changes to the language you will make (MEDEA the musical?). With music and spectacle, you should write about sound and visual aspects of your production. For spectacle, you may also download images to help demonstrate what your set or scenery might look like.
