1. Critical analysis and evaluation of at least two completing theoretical perspectives and arguments relating to crime causation and/or crime management relevant to your chosen research report.
You begin this section by arguing that Strain Theory and Social Learning Theory are the most suitable theories to explain the cause of sex offending referencing Flora and Keohane 2013 to support your assertion. A good start here would have been to present Flora and Keohane’s ideas that relate to your assertion. This would have illustrated to the reader/assessor that you have found a credible base from which to begin a critical analysis of Strain theory. There are a range of articles that examine Agnew’s work on Strain theory some which support the idea that Strain Theory can help explain sex offender behaviour and some that do not support this idea – indeed Agnew has written on the subject of Strain theory and its inability to explain sex offending. This would have been a way to develop a critical analysis of this particular theoretical perspective.
Instead you have made some generalized remarks about Strain Theory, which do not relate to any theoretical understanding or empirical observations that help explain sex offending or the management/rehabilitation of sex offenders. In part you seem to present your own views around the issue of masculinity and ‘third class’ families that misrepresent current academic thought. Discussing such ideas and using concepts that are not supported by the literature are not acceptable in academic work. On occasion you reference a source that does not relate to the argument you are attempting to make. For example, you refer to Arnold 2013, on page 9, when outlining the above ideas, however Arnold’s work relate to illicit drug trafficking, not sex offending.
You then present Social Learning Theory, making reference to Ronald Akers. You have missed the opportunity here to develop a in depth critical analysis of the extent to which this theory can explain sex offending and contribute to the treatment of sex offenders. Social Learning Theory forms one part of our understanding of role of cognition and distorted cognition in the persistence of sex offending and, in turn, how to manage and treat sex offenders. The inclusion and critical analysis of this body of literature would have really enhanced this section of your work. Instead you have made broad statements and sweeping assumptions about why children and adults commit crime generally, most of which appears to be based upon your own beliefs.
2. Explore and analyse the relationship between theoretical developments in forensic criminology and wider socio-economic and political process relevant to your chosen research report.
