1 In her essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,” Laura Mulvey
describes what she calls cinema’s “voyeuristic” and “fetishistic” ways
of seeing. What does she mean by these terms? After examining these
terms, apply them to Alfred Hitchcock’s film Rear Window. How does
this film invite or create the “voyeuristic” and “fetishistic” vision
Mulvey writes about. Provide specific and detailed examples from the
film to support your argument.
2 According to Mulvey, how and why does the experience to watching a film
in a dark theater create and/or heighten the type vision she
describes. Compare her description of the theater with your own
experience of watching the film (likely on your laptop in your own
home or in a public space).
3 Select an image from contemporary culture (film television, advertising,
etc.) that you feel embodies Mulvey’s concept of voyeuristic/fetishistic
vision and explain why.
The length of the short essay is 3 pages, excluding title page and
illustrations. Each question will ask you to consider a selected reading, or
readings, in relation to an example of visual culture. Critical to these assignments
will be your ability to integrate visual culture with the readings. Students who do
NOT turn their papers in on time will receive a zero for this assignment. No
exception. No excuses. These short essays must follow established essay
requirements (see below), have a clear thesis statement, and be cited
appropriately.
Essay Requirements:
• Minimum of 3 pages of double-spaced text (excluding bibliography and
illustrations) in a commonly used academic font, such as Times New
Roman 12 pt. Paper can be as long as you wish, but not shorter than 3
pages.
• Footnote citations of all sources. In the case of this assignment, your
sources may be limited to the reading that the assignment is based on.
You are not required to conduct additional research, but you are welcome
to reference other sources if you choose.
• Properly formatted footnotes following the latest edition of the Chicago
Manual of Style.

• Include illustrations with descriptive captions (artist, title, date, etc.) for any
object or image discussed in your paper. Each illustration should be
numbered (ex. Illus. 1, Illus. 2; Fig. 1, Fig. 2), and you must use these
numbers when referring to the illustrations in your essay.
