learned about food labeling

This week you learned about food labeling. For this forum, I want you to find a protein supplement, for example, CytoSport Muscle Milk Chocolate Protein Supplement Powder sold by Walgreens. You can find a supplement using the web or going to a store. Locate the list of ingredients and nutrition label. You will need this for your forum post. Do not use a supplement someone else has used.

1.List the ingredients and tell the class the functional property of each ingredient. In other words, what it contributes to the product. Don’t confuse functional property with nutritional/health property. For example, one of the ingredients in CytoSport Muscle Milk Chocolate Protein Supplement Powder is fructooligosaccharides. This contributes sweetness to the product. I suggest you first look in the “Natural Standard Integrative Database”. You can find this in our library under “Articles/Databases,” “Selected Topic Databases.” If your ingredient is not in the database, then search it on the web to find out why the manufacture used it in the product or what it contributes to the product (functional property). Again, be very careful that you tell us the functional properties, not the health properties, of the ingredient.
2.Include a bibliography of your information sources.
3.Tell the class about the nutrition information, for example:
a.How many calories per serving?
b.How many calories are from fat and carbohydrate?
c.Does it contain any other vitamins or minerals?
4.Evaluate the product. Would you use it? Why or why not?
