In the ‘New System’ and later the “Monadology’, Leibniz proposes new accounts of the nature of substance and the nature of casual relations. He argues that these accounts solve several weaknesses and difficulties in earlier 17th century metaphysical systems. These included the the failure he saw in Descartes and Locke to create a sound theory of substance and the flaws he saw in Descartes’ account of mind-body interaction and causation generally.
Present these accounts of substance and causality and these advantages which Leibniz thinks they have when compared to these previous theories.
