Refer to Vroom’s Participative Decision-making Model, . Give an example of a specific decision that you and/or your boss have had to make. If you have not held a
formal job, use family or roommates. Then answer the following questions with detailed explanations:
1. Was the decision time driven or development driven (address decision urgency, cost factors; team commitment and competency to make the decision or need to perform
on their own in the future,)? This will help you determine which model, Time driven or Development Driven .
2. What questions on page 114 (fourth paragraph and in the models’ headings on page 115) did you ask to determine the best decision style? Be sure to include and
explain your high (H) and low (L) importance ratings for each.
3. Using Exhibit 4-11 on page 115, plug in your responses to the questions. What is the best decision style under these circumstances (i.e., decide, delegate, consult
(individuals or group), facilitate)?

Answer Questions That Determine the Appropriate Participative Decision Style. To deter-
ine which o the ve leadershi styles is the ost aroriate or a given
situation, you answer a series o diagnostic questions based on seven variables.
Note that the questions are the sae on both odels. The seven questions
are nubered 1 through 7 and are ound at the to o the odel. As stated in
Exhibit 4-11, you rate each questions as high (H) or low (L) in iortance.
Here we exlain each question in ore detail by its nuber: (1) How
iortant is the decision to the success o the roject or organization? (2) How
iortant is grou coitent to ileenting the decision? (3) How uch
knowledge and exertise does the leader have with resect to this decision? (4) I
the leader were to ake the decision alone, is the certainty that the grou would
be coitted to the decision H or L? (5) Does the grou show H or L suort
or the tea or organizational goals to be attained? (6) How uch knowledge
and exertise do individual grou ebers have with resect to this decision?
and (7) Is grou ebers’ coetence in working together as a tea to solve
the roble H or low L?
Not all seven questions are relevant to all decisions. In soe situations, as
ew as two questions are needed to select the ost aroriate leadershi style.
As questions 3 and 6 ily, or iortant decisions, it is critical to include the
leader and/or grou ebers with the exertise to solve the roble. The issue
o coitent (questions 2 and 4) is also iortant. And as questions 5 through
7 ily, a leader should not delegate decisions to grous with low suort or
objectives, low grou exertise, and low tea coetence.
