In this assignment you will highlight the event and its importance to the field as well as the implications it may have had for our country in terms of politics, crime fighting and international relations
You may only report on the event you have been assigned to research. Using official sources, mostly newspapers or historical websites that will appear in a bibliography at the end of your report (NO WIKIPEDIA as that is NOT an original source and you need all original sources) you will explain the context of the event and why it was important both then and now. Use “Google Scholar” from inside the library website online or go into Lexis Nexis database under “news” or for some of you books or historical websites. Some of these events may also have films or books written about them, you should try to include such sources which you will hopefully be able to access. If you need assistance with conducting online research contact your UHD librarian online for help with accessing legitimate academic sources such as newspapers. You must cite all factual information in your paper.
In at least two full pages of text (double spaced, 12 point type, 1 inch margins NOT counting any heading or bibliographic references) you will highlight the major facts the describe the event, and circumstances leading up to the event (any background information that is significant) describe how the people and activities came to be involved in the crime/conflict and how the outcome of the incident is now treated by textbooks and media, public opinion and perhaps policies that have evolved from lessons learned. Be sure to relate the events to any issues that are related to our discussions and readings about topics in comparative criminal justice such as how the culture of the areas involved might influence the interpretation of the events or the outcome. This is a short reaction paper (2 pages) that might compare these events to other similar of notable events both at that time, and today. You may want to address how society views these often “larger than life” events. For more contemporary events, you may want to explain how the media and public opinion shape the concept of crime and crime fighting, why there might be different reactions to this particular event now than perhaps in the past and what you might have thought about this event if you were present when it happened.
If you use any websites in your bibliography you must double check them to make sure the url takes you right to the material you used. Papers will be graded on the writer’s ability to address the issues in an academic style and following the directions of the assignment. Because this is a short paper Do NOT engage in any generalized introduction or conclusion – focus on major ideas.
