Oral Presentation
Through this series of tutorial presentations, you will gain a good understanding of the application of
psychology in the public health and medical spheres.
Working in small groups, you will give a verbal presentation illustrating the application of health
psychology to a specific health issue. Listed below are the topics for presentation. I

1. Describe (using appropriate visual aids etc.) the health condition under investigation. This
includes detailing how the condition presents, relevant epidemiological data, known risk
factors, prognosis, treatments etc. When your topic is not a specific health condition, you
need to detail what the public health issue involves, costs to the community etc.
2. Identify and describe centres (e.g. hospitals, community centres, clinics etc.) that offer
programmes and psychological interventions for this condition. You could consider
interviewing someone from this centre(s) or receive information through other searches (e.g.
brochures, pamphlets, web-sites etc.). You should provide information about the programme
i ” offered, the role of psychologists in the programme (especially if part of a multi-disciplinary
team),
the types of patients served and access to the services, the costs and benefits of the
K“ programme to the patient and/or community, and the types of activities included in the
programme.
3. Identify allied health professionals working in public health or medical settings related to the
health condition or issue. Detail what training and experience was necessary for this position,
what services do they provide (e.g. testing, counselling to patients, staff education,
prevention, public health policy, or programme evaluation). Please ensure confidentiality
when providing this information to the class.
4. Bring in research findings of relevant experiments and studies and appropriate theories to
explain the health condition or issue under consideration. Detail what research has been
conducted into various psychological interventions and assess the effectiveness of these
interventions against each other and how these psychological interventions might be used in
conjunction with non-psychological interventions
5. Evaluate whether the current services as per question 2 conform and/or fail to conform to
current research findings and theories in health science. Using research findings and theories,
offer suggestions for programmes that could be developed for the condition or health issue.
Identify who, where and what such a programme would involve. Outline any
recommendations you might have for improving the current services. Allocation of topics will
be conducted in the first tutorial from the list below.
