POlice: Streetcorner Politicains

Project description
THE BOOK IS: Muir, William Ker, Jr. 1977. Police: Streetcorner Politicians. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press

William Muir, Police: Streetcorner Politicians
pp. 189- 296.
Over the next two weeks we will discuss William Muirs study of the police. Be cautioned ‘ this is not simply an overview of a police department, but rather a close examination of the types of people found within an organization, and how well those types of people mesh with the mission of the organization. As one student put it (in her review in a previous semester): Police is an extremely accessible, yet dense, analysis of power and human attitudes which would benefit any public manager or social scientist.
When you brief each of the readings, you should keep the following questions in mind:
1. What is the Research Question? Are there additional, important arguments that stem from the research question?
2. What evidence does the author provide to support the arguments?
3. Place the author in the context of other arguments/debates about this topic. As the semester progresses you should draw on previous readings for this contextual analysis.
4. Do you buy it? That is, does the author make a compelling case for her position? What rings true, and what seems unreasonable?

Presumably, some of these questions will be difficult. I am not looking for a ‘holy grail’ type of answer in your reviews, but rather a serious critical and analytical examination of the material. BE CRITICAL.
