Developmental and difficulties in the early Years: poster guidelines

TOPIC

Childhood depression Parents and carers
The task is to choose a difficulty in early psychological development. The key elements of the poster must be 1) a definition, summary of key features and prevalence of the difficulty, 2) a brief critical review of explanations for the difficulty, and 3) identification of the implications for supporting psychological development in the nursery/ school/ home. These three elements of the poster should receive approximately equal attention. Evaluation of explanations and the identification of implications are very important parts of the poster – the work must go beyond a description of the features. Remember that the hypothetical audience for the poster is parents and carer, so make sure that the poster is designed appropriately to interest and inform these groups

Rationale

Posters are used frequently by psychologists to present research at conferences. They are also used to communicate research findings and their implications to people outside of psychology, for example, to professionals working with children in schools, nurseries and other settings, for example in school staff rooms or to parents, for example in Health Centre waiting rooms. Good posters present concise summaries of key information and may make use of diagrams or illustrations to help communicate effectively to the reader.

The content of the poster will be an explanation and evaluation of research on a chosen difficulty in early psychological development for the purpose of informing a hypothetical audience of teachers, nursery workers or parents. The poster should provide the following:
