Strategy, Business information and analysis

Strategy, Business information and analysis
Project description
Assignment Question:

“Consultants and theorists that compete for giving advice to companies
cannot even agree on the most basic questions; what is strategy; does it
matter; and how is it constructed?”

Required: discuss the statement and answer the three questions contained
in it.

Approaching the question

Students are reminded that whilst some questions may very evidently refer
to a particular unit they are all designed to span issues across the entire
module. A full answer to the question will require reflection on the issues
that you have encountered throughout the module. It is important to bear in
mind that the content of your answer will depend on the argument that you
wish to put forward in answer to the question and not solely on the
concepts that the question explicitly identifies.
Assessment Criteria

Demonstration of a good understanding of the concepts and ideas contained
in the module along with a critical evaluation of these concepts and ideas.
Presentation of a suitable set of references.
4. Let us now take the suggestibility concept into the business world. Groupthink is a phenomenon associated with groups and teams whereby peer pressure and social conformity prevails over individuality and the expression of original thoughts and ideas. For a very compelling example of this phenomenon at work, look up Solomon Asch’s Conformity Experiments. What are some potential consequences to this human flaw in the business setting? How can we counter the groupthink/suggestibility problem? (Hint: Think back to Susan Cain’s TED Talk “The Power of Introverts”).
5. Toward the end of this chapter, Dr. Sagan shares with us the stories of the apparition of the Virgin Mary who, by witness accounts, would visit individuals during medeival Europe and demand actions from the people lest they be punished for insolence. In the spirit of skepticism, Dr. Sagan cites the prosaicness of the visions and the requests made as evidence to be considered in scrutinizing the credibility of the stories. What does Dr. Sagan mean by “prosaicness”? Give specific examples in the stories that would seem to support this claim. Do you agree with Dr. Sagan on this point? Why or why not?
