1. Please read the very short essay, “With Friends Like These…” by Tom Hodgkinson. Click on this link to view it online: With Friends Like These… This essay is a good example of an argument of evaluation. First, identify the thesis in this essay and describe how it evaluation. What is he judging? What is the thesis, or main claim? What is the criterion he is using for this evaluation and how does he support the claims he makes?

Next, describe briefly how Hodgkinson’s essay might be revised to create both a distinct argument of definition, and an argument of proposal. What would the thesis be for each of these revisions, what sort of evidence or support would be needed to establish each of these arguments.

Create a lesson plan that includes the three steps below:

A. Describe how the essay you chose for the reading assignment demonstrates the mode you selected. Will you include additional supporting texts for your students to read as well? (other essays from the book, a website, a Ted-talk, or a recorded program?) If so, how will these additional materials help to demonstrate the mode of argument you are teaching?

2. Develop one thoughtful discussion question that would help students understand and practice the mode of argument you are teaching.
